Visual Arts

Dear Parents,

My name is Carissa Hellewell. I am the art teacher here at Poinsettia Elementary and am lucky enough to have your Amazing Artists here at Poinsettia for 2 years now.

I just wanted to say a little bit about what the kids will be learning and exploring in my classroom this year. We will be doing a lot of work with the Elements of Art exploring color, line, shape, space, form, texture and value and touching on the Principles of Art balance, proportion, emphasis, variety, movement, rhythm and harmony. I hope to teach the children engaging lessons about all of this while studying real artists and exploring new techniques weekly.  My expectations are listening, respect for themselves and others, as well as trying the best they can.

Art class is all about creativity and being comfortable exploring new things.  I like to give the kids a framework to start with and the tools needed to make their own artwork. It takes a lot for these students to be vulnerable enough to create new things.  We try really hard to have a classroom culture to foster love, acceptance and positivity for all students no matter their natural abilities. After all, creativity leads to innovation and these kids will be the innovators of the future!

Art is a happy place and there is no better evidence of that than a whole lot of mess. I appreciate that these artists are careful and responsible, but the last thing I want is for them to refrain from making beautiful art because they don’t want to make a little mess. Please send your artist to school in clothes that they can get a little messy in.  After all, mess equals fun!

I couldn’t be happier to spend another year here with your artists! Thank you for supporting us in the art room!

*Remember to wear "ART CLOTHES" on your ART day!

It's a good idea to have an old shirt to put over your clothes when creating art.  Ask your teacher if it would be okay to leave it in the classroom so it is readily available.  Old shoes are perfect to wear as well.  If we are painting and your child is wearing new shoes, s/he will be asked to remove them for the art lesson.
